WHAT IS INTERPERSONAL TRAUMA?
Interpersonal trauma, also known as relational trauma, refers to the emotional, psychological, or physical harm caused by relationships or interactions with others. This type of trauma occurs when a person experiences harm within a relational context, and can occur with significant relationships, such as family, romantic partnerships, and friendships, or even in academic or professional interactions. It can happen at any stage of life from childhood through adulthood and can be caused by one person or a group of people. This type of trauma can result from emotional neglect, abuse, betrayal, bullying, or ongoing patterns of invalidation, and can leave deep emotional wounds that affect a person’s self-worth, ways of relating to others, and overall well-being.
